In a world when healthcare marches first and foremost before anything else, Bahekar Superspeciality Hospital is on the top list.
The hospital would not have happened if it was not for the dedication and commitment of a young doctor couple Drs Deepak and Alka Bahekar. Both of them joined government hospital Gondia in 1983. It was a part of their postgraduate training. It was life-changing for both of them as they fostered strong bonds with locals at Gondia. Their hard work and desire to bring about modern medical facilities drove them to upgrade the practice of medicine in this small town. It is no surprise then that they decided to make Gondia their home and offer medical care to people.
Two years down the line, in 1985, the foundation of Bahekar Nursing Home was laid. It was not an easy task to enshrine the nursing home but their tenacity to give better medical facilities paid off. Bahekar Nursing Home started with 10 beds. It had 2-beds in ICU, an operation theatre and a 24 hour dedicated service. As the nursing home became a healthcare hotspot the hospital was soon upgraded to a 25-bed setup.
The demand increased as the doctor couple offered quality healthcare to this small town. It was in the mid-90s that Drs Bahekar decided to take the challenge of elevating healthcare in Gondia.
“Gondiacare” was formed and a full-fledged ICU of 10 beds with state-of-the-art ventilators, blood distribution unit, neonatal care center was introduced. The number of beds soon rose to 50.
Under Gondiacare the first dialysis center was set up. The hospital also earned a good repute for high-risk Obstetrics care. Over the years, the facility offered various specialized endeavours such as laproscopic surgery, neurosurgery, neurosurgery and joint replacement surgery.
Super specialty doctors paid a monthly visit including cardiologists, nephrologists, and oncologists. Links with various public and private insurance companies were introduced to help the patients with their medical insurance.
Monthly camps via the “Kalpataru Charitable Trust” became a regular feature. CMEs and academic meetings have been regularly conducted to upgrade the knowledge and skills of the medical fraternity in and around Gondia.
Well-structured internship programmes are now introduced to students of the Homeopathy, Ayurvedic and Nursing colleges giving the region qualified and well-trained personnel to the healthcare infrastructure.
Today Bahekar Super Speciality Hospital has a modern 75-bed facility, advanced cardiac cath-lab, a 32 slice CT scan, a modern world-class obstetric set-up. It also boasts of cardiac health club and rehabilitation services, a large auditorium with facilities to conduct CMEs and a team of highly qualified, committed consultants and paramedical staff to deliver excellent healthcare under one roof.
The four cornerstones and the bedrock of BSH are ethical practices, hard work, kindness and dedication that has made this multi-speciality hospital in Nagpur a star in its own right.
